REFRIGERANT SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS

To diagnose system, connect manifold gauge set to high and low sides of system, then observe gauge readings with engine operating at 1,500 RPM, blower speed on high and temperature control set at Max Cool. Refer to charts, Figs. through , for system diagnosis.

High side reading should be 200-228 psi, while low side reading should be 21-35 psi. at ambient temperature of 86-95°F.

  • Remove setscrew and reservoir tank, then the cap and strainer from reservoir.
  • Remove two grommets and place cylinder in vise.
  • Push piston in and remove stopper bolt, Fig. .
  • Push pistons in and remove snap ring, then No. 1 piston carefully by hand.
  • Place cylinder on edges of two wooden blocks and tap on cylinder until No. 2 piston comes out.

  • Obtain the vehicle owners radio theft protection code prior to disconnecting the battery ground cable, if equipped.
  • Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  • Remove the fuel fill cap to release fuel tank pressure.
  • Place a shop towel over the union bolt at top of fuel filter. Slowly loosen the union bolt allowing fuel pressure to bleed down.
  • Whenever the union bolt is loosened to relieve fuel system pressure, always replace the bolt gasket.

  • Disconnect brake hose from shock absorber.
  • Inspect for bearing backlash and axle hub deviation as follows:
    • Remove brake caliper and disc. Support caliper securely.
    • Place dial indicator near center of axle hub and inspect backlash in bearing shaft direction. If backlash measurement exceeds .0020 inch, replace bearing.
    • Inspect deviation at surface of axle hub outside hub bolt using dial indicator. If deviation exceeds .0028 inch, replace axle hub.
