DESCRIPTION

Two coolant fans, wired in parallel, operate whenever cooling is required.

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has two coolant fan control terminals, one for high speed and one for low speed. When the PCM's low speed control closes at connector C3, terminal C4, it grounds the low speed coolant fan relay coil. When the ignition switch is in the run position and relay contacts close, voltage is supplied to the coolant fans. The coolant fan resistors drop the voltage to the lefthand coolant fan, causing it to run in low speed. The righthand coolant fan runs a...

Vehicle: 1993 Pontiac Grand Prix SE 3.1 V6 GAS

DESCRIPTION

The coolant fan is controlled by the engine control module (ECM) via the coolant fan relay. The ECM receives input signals from the coolant temperature sensor (CTS), vehicle speed sensor and the A/C mode selector. The ECM activates the coolant fan relay when the engine coolant temperature exceeds 227°F, the air conditioning is turned on or if the coolant temperature sensor fails when vehicle speed is below 35 mph by grounding circuit 535 or 536. When circuit 535 or 536 is grounded, the coolant fan relay energizes, applying battery voltage to the coolant fan. The ...

DESCRIPTION

The coolant fan is turned on and off by the ECM based on inputs from the coolant temperature sensor, vehicle speed sensor and the A/C system, if equipped. Battery voltage is applied at all times to terminal 1 of the coolant fan relay and, when the ignition switch is in RUN position, battery voltage is applied to terminal 5 of the relay. The ECM energizes the coolant fan relay by grounding circuit 335. The relay energizes and battery voltage is applied to the coolant fan.

With Vacuum Pump

Vacuum pumps suitable for removing air and moisture from A/C systems are commercially available. A specification for system pumpdown used here is 28-291/2 inches vacuum. This reading can be attained at or near sea level only. For each 1000 feet of altitude this operation is performed, the reading will be 1 inch vacuum higher. For example, at 5000 feet elevation, only 23-241/2 inches of vacuum can be obtained. The system must be completely discharged before it can be evacuated. Damage to the vacuum pump will result if pressurized refrigerant is allowe...
