- Disconnect radiator hose from thermostat housing, Fig. .
- Remove thermostat housing, then thermostat from engine.
- Remove all old gasket material from housing and engine block mating surfaces.

- Rotate compressor pulley by hand and check for excess bearing play and drag. Replace pulley as required.
- Apply 8 volts to the field coil and check that the armature is drawn by the rotor pulley.
- Measure clearance between pulley and armature. If the clearance is not between .013-.026 inch for Honda models or .016-.031 for other models, the armature should be removed and correct number of shims should be installed.

- Disconnect battery ground cable and drain engine coolant.
- Remove radiator cowl, cooling fan and pulley.
- Remove alternator drive belt and cooling fan bracket, Fig. .
