HYDRAULIC VALVE, REPLACE

  • Disconnect battery ground cable.
  • Raise and support vehicle.
  • Disconnect electrical connectors from valve, Figs. and .
  • Disconnect brake lines from hydraulic valve.
  • Remove hydraulic valve attaching screws and the valve.
  • Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
    • Torque valve attaching screws to 16-25 ft. lbs.
    • Bleed brake system as described under "Bleeding Brakes" in "Hydraulic Brake" section.

  • Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
  • Remove brake drum. If brake lining is dragging on brake drum, back off brake adjustment by rotating adjustment screw. If brake drum is rusted or corroded to axle flange and cannot be removed, lightly tap axle flange to drum mounting surface with a suitable hammer.
  • Using brake spring pliers or equivalent, remove primary and secondary shoe return springs, Fig. .
  • Remove automatic adjuster cable from anchor plate, then unhook from adjuster lever.

DISASSEMBLE

  • Disconnect caliper assembly as described under "Brake Pad, Replace."
  • On Dakota models, support caliper assembly on upper control arm on shop towel or equivalent to absorb any hydraulic fluid loss.
  • On Mini Van models, hang caliper assembly on a wire hook away from rotor.
  • On all models, place a small piece of wood between piston and caliper fingers, then carefully depress brake pedal to push piston out of caliper bore. Prop brake pedal to any position below first inch of brake pedal travel to prevent brake fluid loss.

  • Raise and support vehicle.
  • Release parking brake and back off cable adjustment to slacken cable.
  • Tighten cable adjusting nut until a slight drag is obtained while rotating wheels.
  • Loosen cable adjusting nut until rear wheels rotate freely, then an additional two turns.
  • Apply and release parking brake to check for proper operation. The rear wheels should rotate without dragging.
