Safety Precautions

When working on or around brake assemblies, care must be taken to prevent breathing asbestos dust. Many manufacturers incorporate asbestos fibers in the production of brake linings. During routine service operations, the amount of asbestos dust from brake lining wear is at a low level due to a chemical breakdown during use. Do not sand or grind brake linings unless suitable local exhaust ventilation equipment is used to prevent excessive asbestos exposure.

Brake Roughness

Thickness Variation

If roughness or vibration is encountered during highway operation or if pedal pumping is experienced at low speeds, the disc may have excessive thickness variation. Measure the disc at 12 points with a micrometer at a radius approximately one inch from edge of disc. If thickness measurements vary by more than .0005 inch, replace the disc.

Lateral Runout

Excessive lateral runout of braking disc may cause a knocking back of the pistons, possibly creating increased pedal travel and vibration when brakes are applied.

• Release parking brake.
• Raise and support vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assemblies.
• On models equipped with anti-lock brakes, remove wheel speed sensor.
• On all models, remove brake drum and wheel hub.
• Remove brake shoe hold down springs and pins, Fig. .
• Disconnect brake shoes from wheel cylinders. Hold wheel cylinder pistons in place with suitable rubber bands.

Master Cylinder

Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, Marauder, Mustang & Town Car

• Depress brake pedal several times to exhaust system vacuum.
• Disconnect master cylinder brake lines and electrical connectors.
• Disconnect hydraulic control unit supply hose at master cylinder. Secure hose aside.
• Remove two mounting bolts, then secure proportioning valve and tubes aside.
• Remove mounting nuts and master cylinder.
• Reverse procedure to install.

On Sable and Taurus models, the disc rotor is a hat section-type of composite steel and cast iron. A Rotunda Rotor Mounting Adapter tool No. 054-00032, or equivalent, is required for use on the brake lathe for refinishing. Failure to use the adapter will result in gouging the brake disc, making it unfit for use.
