Removal
- Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
- Remove brake drum. If brake drum cannot be remove easily, insert a suitable screwdriver through hole in backing plate, then push adjuster lever away from adjuster and back of adjustment tension.
- Disconnect return spring, then remove front shoe hold-down spring, retainers and pin.
- Disconnect anchor spring, then remove front brake shoe and anchor spring, Fig. .
- Remove rear shoe hold-down spring, retainers and pin, using suitable tool, then disconnect parking brake cable from anchor plate.

- Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
- Disconnect brake hose from brake tube and caliper using a suitable tool.
- Remove caliper attaching bolts, then the caliper, Fig. .
- Remove anti-squeal shim(s), brake pad, anti-rattle spring, pad guide plate and pad support plate.
- Reverse procedure to install, then bleed brake system.

- Remove sliding bushing and boot.

Removal
- Remove master cylinder as outlined under .
- Remove charcoal vapor canister as required.
- Remove brake booster vacuum hose.
- Remove pedal return spring, clip, clevis pin and clevis locknut, Fig. .
- Remove brake booster nuts. Pull out booster and gasket.
Installation
- Adjust length of booster pushrod as follows:
- Install gasket on master cylinder.
- Install brake booster pushrod gauge tool No. 09737-00010, or equivalent, on gasket.
- Lower pin until its tip slightly touches the piston.

Parking Brake

- Apply parking brake and count number of notches on parking brake sector. Specified number of notches should be as follows:
- On Camry, Camry Solara, Corolla, Echo and Matrix models, 5-8 clicks.
- On Celica models, 4-7 clicks.
- On all models, remove console box.
- Loosen locknut and turn adjustment screw until lever travel is correct.
- Tighten locknut and install console.

Master Cylinder
- Fill reservoir with fluid.
- Disconnect tubes from master cylinder. Then slowly depress brake pedal and hold.
- Block off outlet holes with fingers, and release pedal. Repeat three or four times.
