Disassemble
  • Remove master cylinder from vehicle.
  • Remove reservoir cover and diaphragm. Discard old brake fluid in reservoir.
  • Inspect cover and diaphragm. Replace if cut, cracked or deformed.
  • Remove fluid level switch and proportioning valve assembly, if equipped.

Brake System Bleed

Gravity and vacuum bleeding procedures are not recommended for use with the anti-lock brake system. The manual bleed procedure is the preferred method, although pressure bleeding is also possible. Do not pump the brake pedal during the bleeding process, as fluid aeration may occur.

When wheel slip is detected during a brake application, the ABS enters anti-lock mode. During anti-lock braking, hydraulic pressure in the individual wheel circuits is controlled to prevent any wheel from slipping. A separate hydraulic line and specific solenoid valves are provided for each wheel. The ABS can decrease, hold, or increase hydraulic pressure to each wheel brake. The ABS cannot, however, increase hydraulic pressure above the amount which is transmitted by the master cylinder during braking.

The height sensing proportioning valve must be adjusted whenever the valve and/or linkage is disassembled or removed for service.   • Mark relationship of drum to hub.
  • Remove and discard retaining clip.
  • Remove brake drum. If brake drum does not come off easily, proceed as follows:
    • Loosen parking brake cable.
    • Remove backing plate access hole plug.
    • Disengage self adjuster by inserting suitable flat-bladed tool through backing plate access hole.
    • Loosen adjuster screw by inserting another flat-bladed tool through access hole .
    • Install access hole plug.
    • Apply small amount of penetrating oil around brake drum center hole.
