Hydraulic Brake Fluid Color
Hydraulic brake fluid must conform with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 116. Under this standard, brake fluids are visually different from other automotive fluids such as transmission, power steering and engine.
Fluid color in a normal brake system may vary from its original color for many reasons. A brake master cylinder may show significantly different shades fluid color between the two brake master cylinder reservoirs. Color may also appear to vary between cast steel and die cast aluminum reservoirs. Some reasons for discolorati...

Vehicle: 2001 Mercury Cougar 2.0 L4 GAS
Complaints about power brake operation should be handled as if two separate systems exist. Inspect for faults in the hydraulic system first. If it is satisfactory, start inspecting the power brake circuit. For a quick inspection of proper power unit operation, press the brake pedal firmly and then start the engine. The pedal should fall away slightly and less pressure should be needed to maintain the pedal in any position.
Another inspection begins with installation of a suitable pressure gauge in the brake hydraulic system. Take a reading with the engine Off and the power unit n...

Removal
- Remove rear disc brake caliper assembly as outlined under "Caliper Service." Do not disconnect flexible hose unless caliper requires service. Support caliper with wire or tie strap so flexible hose is not stretched or twisted.
- Remove rear disc support bracket to wheel knuckle bolts, then the rear disc support bracket and brake shoes and linings.
- Remove two nuts, then the rotor from rear hub.
Installation
- If installing new rotor, remove protective coating from rotor with suitable carburetor cleaner.
- Lubricate rear hub pilot diameter w...

Inspection & Verification
- Verify customer concern by operating the system.
- Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage, Fig. .
- If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause before proceeding on the further steps.
- If the concern remains after the inspection, connect scan tool to data link connector (DLC).
- Perform DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST. If scan tool responds with:
- CKT914, CKT915 or CKT70 - ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP.
- NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for anti...

Disc Brakes -> Front Disc Brakes -> Brake System Bleed -> System Priming -> Wheel Bleeding Sequence
Vehicle: 2001 Mercury Cougar S 2.5 V6 GAS
Pressure bleeding is recommended for all hydraulic disc brake systems.
Do not reuse brake fluid drained from the hydraulic system when bleeding the brakes. Ensure disc brake pistons are returned to their normal positions and the shoe and lining assemblies are properly seated.
Do not shake the pressure bleeder tank while air is being added or after it has been pressurized. This will prevent air from the tank getting into the lines. Do not move the tank during the bleeding operation. The tank should be kept at least one third full.
On models equipped with power brakes, exhaust the...

Disc Brakes -> Front Disc Brakes -> Troubleshooting -> Abnormal Conditions -> Brake Booster Operation Test -> Brake Master Cylinder -> Brake Roughness -> Bypass Condition Inspection -> Lateral Runout -> Non-Pressure Leaks -> Normal Conditions -> Thickness Variation -> Wheel Bearing Looseness
Vehicle: 2001 Mercury Cougar 2.0 L4 GAS
Brake Roughness
Thickness Variation
If roughness or vibration is encountered during highway operation or if pedal pumping is experienced at low speeds, the disc may have excessive thickness variation. Measure the disc at 12 points with a micrometer at a radius approximately one inch from edge of disc. If thickness measurements vary by more than .0005 inch, replace the disc.
Lateral Runout
Excessive lateral runout of braking disc may cause a "knocking back" of the pistons, possibly creating increased pedal travel and vibration when brakes are applied.
Wheel Bearing Looseness
Adjust the w...
