Service Brake
The rear brake shoes adjust automatically when the vehicle is driven in reverse and the brakes are applied sharply several times. Manual adjustment is required only when brake shoes are replaced. When adjusting rear brakes, ensure parking brake is properly adjusted and adjuster is operating freely.

- With drums removed, clean areas where shoes contact backing plate, then apply suitable lubricant to contact areas. Ensure lubricant does not contaminate linings.

Brake System Bleed
Aerostar & 1997 Ranger
The RABS II master cylinder and hydraulic control unit must be bled using anti-lock brake adapter tool No. T90P-50-ALA and jumper tool No. T93T-50-ALA, or equivalents. If this procedure is not followed, air will be trapped in the hydraulic control unit and will contribute to improper brake pedal feel.
Bleed system as follows:
- Place bleed/harness switch on bleed adapter tool to bleed position.
- Turn ignition switch to On position. At this point, the red OFF indicator should turn on.

Brake Drums
Any time brake drums are removed for brake service, braking surface diameter should be checked with a suitable micrometer at several points to determine if they are within the safe oversize limit stamped on the brake drum outer surface. If braking surface diameter exceeds specifications, the drum must be replaced. If braking surface diameter is within specifications, drums should be cleaned and inspected for cracks, scores, deep grooves, taper, out of round and heat spotting. If drums are cracked or heat spotted, they must be replaced.

Use care when removing the brake master cylinder to avoid scratching the exposed primary piston.
- Disconnect wiring harness from low fluid level warning switch in master cylinder reservoir, then the low fluid warning switch from master cylinder.
- Disconnect brake pressure differential valve warning lamp switch from combination valve, then the front and rear brake tubes from master cylinder.
- Remove nuts attaching master cylinder and booster bracket holder to power brake booster.

- Remove brake master cylinder attaching nuts.
- Position brake master cylinder aside.
- Disconnect booster vacuum hose.
- Disconnect power distribution box auxiliary relay and set aside.
- Remove fuse panel cover.
- Remove stop lamp switch self-locking pin.
- Remove stop lamp switch and brake booster pushrod from brake pedal pin.
- Remove power brake booster nuts.
- Remove power brake booster.
- Reverse procedure to install. Torque booster mounting nuts to 16-21 ft. lbs.
