Hydraulic Brake Fluid Color

Hydraulic brake fluid must conform with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 116. Under this standard, brake fluids are visually different from other automotive fluids such as transmission, power steering and engine.

Fluid color in a normal brake system may vary from its original color for many reasons. A brake master cylinder may show significantly different shades fluid color between the two brake master cylinder reservoirs. Proper adjustment of the master cylinder pushrod is necessary to ensure proper operation of the power brake system. A pushrod that is too long will prevent the master cylinder piston from completely releasing hydraulic pressure, eventually causing the brakes to drag. A pushrod that is too short will cause excessive brake pedal travel and cause groaning noises to come from the booster when the brakes are applied. Master Cylinder

• Depress brake pedal several times to exhaust all vacuum in system.
• Disconnect brake lines from master cylinder, then all required electrical connectors.
• Disconnect hydraulic control unit supply hose at master cylinder. Secure hose in a position to prevent brake fluid loss.
• Remove two bolts which attach proportioning valve bracket to brake master cylinder. Secure proportioning valve and tubes in a position to prevent damage or loss of brake fluid.
