Anti-Lock Brakes -> Delphi (Delco-Moraine) Type VI -> DESCRIPTION -> ABS Warning Lamp -> Brake Warning Lamp -> Electronic Brake Control Module/Electronic Brake & Traction Control Module -> Expansion Spring Brake -> Hydraulic Modulator/Motor Pack Assembly -> System Components -> System Operation -> Wheel Speed Sensors
Vehicle: 1998 Pontiac Firebird Firehawk 5.7 V8 GAS
System Operation
The function of the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) is to minimize wheel lock-up during heavy braking on most road surfaces. The system performs this function by monitoring wheel speed and controlling the brake fluid pressure to each front wheel and both rear wheels during braking. This allows the driver to retain directional stability and better steering capability.
System Components
Refer to Fig. for system component locations.

Disc Brakes -> PBR Single Piston Rear Disc Brake -> Troubleshooting -> Brake Roughness
Vehicle: 1998 Pontiac Firebird Firehawk 5.7 V8 GAS
Brake Roughness
The most common cause of brake chatter on disc brakes is a variation in thickness of the disc. If roughness or vibration is encountered during highway operation or if pedal pulsation is experienced at low speeds, the disc may have excessive thickness variation. To check for this condition, measure the disc at 12 points with a micrometer at a radius approximately one inch from edge of disc. If thickness measu...
