BRAKE SERVICE PROCEDURES FOR 1997 Subaru Legacy AUTOMOBILES

  • Raise and support vehicle.
  • Remove front wheels.
  • Disconnect brake hose from strut.
  • Remove caliper lockpin, then rotate caliper on guide pin, Figs. through .
  • Remove brake pads from support.
  • Reverse procedure to install noting the following:
    • Push piston into caliper body. When piston is difficult to insert, loosen the air bleeder, then push into place.
    • Refer to Figs. and for tightening values.
    • After completing installation, depress brake pedal several times to seat brake pads against rotor. If pedal stroke is excessive, bleed hydraulic system as outlined under, "Hydraulic Brake S... "

  • Remove master cylinder from vehicle.
  • Remove cylinder pin, Fig. .
  • Push piston inward, then remove snap ring.
  • Apply pressure to piston assembly while Inserting a small screwdriver into window of piston retainer and raise piston retainer latch, Fig. .
  • Remove primary and secondary piston assemblies. Do not disassemble pistons. if disassembled, the spring settings will change.
  • Inspect master cylinder inside diameter to piston clearance, Service limit is not to exceed 0.043 inch.
