Disc Brakes -> Type 5-Kelsey-Hayes Dual Pin Floating Caliper Disc Brake, Rear -> Caliper Service -> Overhaul -> Replacement
Vehicle: 1997 Eagle Vision TSI 3.5 V6 GAS
Replacement
- Raise and support vehicle.
- Remove rear wheel and tire assembly.
- Remove two caliper assembly to adapter guide pin bolts.
- Remove caliper from adapter as follows:
- Rotate top of caliper away from adapter.
- Lift caliper off bottom abutment on adapter.
- Support caliper assembly from rear strut to prevent flexible brake hose damage.
- Remove rear rotor from hub by pulling it straight off wheel mounting studs.
Overhaul
- Remove caliper from rotor as described under "Brake Pad Service."

Accessing Diagnostic Trouble Codes
To enter diagnostic mode, vehicle speed must be below 10 mph. If vehicle speed is above 10 mph, a "No Response" message will be displayed on the DRB II. The following are characteristics of diagnostic mode.

Decreasing Brake Pedal Travel
If a decreasing brake pedal is encountered, the power brake unit may be binding internally. To test the power brake unit for this condition proceed as follows:
- Place transmission shift lever into Neutral and start engine.
- Increase engine speed to approximately 1500 RPM, close throttle and completely depress brake pedal.
- Slowly release brake pedal and stop engine.
- Remove vacuum check valve and hose from power brake unit. Observe for backward movement of brake pedal.

Any time the brake drums are removed for brake service, the braking surface diameter should be inspected with a suitable brake drum micrometer at several points to determine if they are within the safe oversize limit stamped on the brake drum outer surface. If the braking surface diameter exceeds specifications, the drum must be replaced.
