Replacement
- Raise and support vehicle.
- Remove front wheel and tire assembly.
- Remove two caliper to steering knuckle guide pin bolts.
- Remove brake caliper from steering knuckle as follows:
- Rotate bottom end of caliper away from knuckle.
- Slide top of caliper down from machined abutment on steering knuckle.
- Support caliper to prevent weight from being applied to brake hose.
Overhaul
- Remove caliper from brake rotor and brake pads from caliper as described in "Brake Pad Service."
- Hang caliper on a wire away from rotor.
- Place a small piece of wood between piston and caliper fingers.

Master Cylinder
When disassembling the master cylinder, note the position of all parts as they are removed for proper installation.
When disassembled, wash all parts in denatured alcohol or clean brake fluid only. Use an air hose to blow out all passages, orifices and valve holes. Air dry and place parts on clean paper or lint-free cloth.

Any time the brake drums are removed for brake service, the braking surface diameter should be inspected with a suitable brake drum micrometer at several points to determine if they are within the safe oversize limit stamped on the brake drum outer surface. If the braking surface diameter exceeds specifications, the drum must be replaced. Testing
- Install suitable pressure gauges, one each on input side and output side of proportioning valve as shown in Fig. .
- Bleed brake line and pressure gauge, then gradually depress brake pedal and observe gauge readings. Refer to "Hydraulic Brake Controls Specifications" chart.
- Observe left and right output pressures.
- Pressure difference between left and right should not be greater than 57 psi.
- If gauge readings are not within specifications, replace proportioning valve.
