DRIVELINE, U-JOINT & CV AXLES REPLACEMENT PROCEDURES FOR 1996 Volvo 960 AUTOMOBILES
Includes CV axle, universal joint, and driveline replacement, for domestic and imported 1996 Volvo 960 cars and light trucks from 1990+.
DRIVESHAFT U-JOINT, Replace -> Assemble -> Disassemble
Vehicle: 1996 Volvo 960 2.9 L6 GAS
Disassemble
- Remove propeller shaft.
- Identify position of propeller shaft in relation to flanges.
- Remove center support bearing.
- Remove propeller shaft.
- Separate two parts.
- Clean area around damaged universal joint.
- Remove snap-rings. Use rust penetrating oil and a punch to loosen. Use snap-ring pliers to remove.
- Remove bearing cups. Use a vise and adjust it so that propeller shaft yoke rests on jaws.
- Use a plastic hammer to tap on drive flange so that bearing cups protrude 3-4 mm (0.12-0.16 in). CAUTION: Do not pound on propeller shaft tube.
- Use a vise to pry out bearing cups...
