BRAKE SERVICE PROCEDURES FOR 1995 Pontiac Bonneville AUTOMOBILES

Includes anti-lock brakes, disc, drum, power and hydraulic brake services diagnostics and procedures for domestic and imported 1995 Pontiac Bonneville cars and light trucks from 1990+.

Anti-lock Brakes -> Bonneville, Eighty Eight, LeSabre, LSS, Ninety Eight & Park Avenue -> Description -> ABS Warning Lamp -> Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) -> System Operation -> Wheel Speed Sensors
Vehicle: 1995 Pontiac Bonneville SSE 3.8 V6 GAS

System Operation

The purpose of the anti-lock brake system, Fig. and , is to prevent wheel lock-up under heavy braking conditions on virtually any road surface. When a wheel locking condition exists, the Pressure Modulator Valve (PMV) assembly isolates each wheel's hydraulic circuit, then begins modulation of fluid pressure according to wheel speed inputs to the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) or Electronic Brake and Traction Control Module (EBTCM). The PMV is controlled by the EBCM.

Modulation occurs by means of three ABS modes: pressure hold, pressure reduce and pressure in...

Disc Brakes -> AC-Delco Single Piston Front Disc Brake (Type 2) -> Troubleshooting -> Brake Roughness
Vehicle: 1995 Pontiac Bonneville SE 3.8 V6 GAS

Brake Roughness

The most common cause of brake chatter on disc brakes is a variation in thickness of the disc. If roughness or vibration is encountered during highway operation or if pedal pulsation is experienced at low speeds, the disc may have excessive thickness variation. To check for this condition, measure the disc at 12 points with a micrometer at a radius approximately one inch from edge of disc. If thic...

Vehicle: 1995 Pontiac Bonneville SE 3.8 V6 GAS

Caliper Removal
  • Remove approximately 2/3 of brake fluid from master cylinder.
  • Raise and support front of vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
  • Position suitable pliers over inboard pad and housing as shown in Fig. , and squeeze pliers to compress caliper piston.
  • If caliper assembly is being removed for service, remove inlet fitting attaching bolt, copper washer, and inlet fitting from caliper housing. Plug opening in inlet fitting to prevent fluid loss and contamination. Do not crimp brake hose, as this may damage internal structure of hose. If only shoe and lining assemblie...

Power Brake Units -> General Service
Vehicle: 1995 Pontiac Bonneville SE 3.8 V6 GAS

Two basic types of power assist mechanisms are used: vacuum assist diaphragm assemblies, which use engine vacuum or, in some cases vacuum pressure developed by an external vacuum pump. The second type is a hydraulic pressure assist mechanism, which use pressure developed by an external pump (usually the power steering pump). Both systems act to increase the force exerted on the master cylinder piston by the operator. This in turn increases the hydraulic pressure delivered to the wheel cylinders, while decreasing driver effort necessary to obtain acceptable stopping performance.

Anti-lock Brakes -> Bonneville, Eighty Eight, LeSabre, LSS, Ninety Eight & Park Avenue -> Diagnosis & Testing -> 1995 Bonneville, Eighty Eight, Ninety Eight, LeSabre & Park Avenue -> 1996 Bonneville, Eighty Eight, LeSabre, LSS, Ninety Eight & Park Avenue -> Accessing Diagnostic Trouble Codes -> Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes -> Diagnostic Tests -> Diagnostic Trouble Code Interpretation -> Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) Test -> Intermittents & Poor Connections (Note On Intermittents) -> Visual Inspection & Functional Check -> Wiring Diagrams
Vehicle: 1995 Pontiac Bonneville SE 3.8 V6 GAS

Accessing Diagnostic Trouble Codes

In the process of controlling the anti-lock brake system, the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) continually monitors operating conditions for possible faults. By comparing system conditions against standard operating limits, certain circuit and component faults can be detected. A four-digit numerical diagnostic trouble code is stored in computer memory when a problem is detected by this self-diagnostic system. The diagnostic trouble codes can later be accessed with a bi-directional scan tool.

The ABS diagnostic trouble codes which may be...
