Removal
- Remove brake pads as outlined previously.
- Disconnect and cap brake line(s).
- Remove caliper attaching bolts and caliper assembly from steering knuckle.
Disassemble
- Remove sleeve, sleeve boot and pin boots, Fig. .
- Protect fingers with shop towel, then blow piston from caliper bore with compressed air.
- Remove piston boot, then pry piston seal from caliper bore using a suitable screwdriver.
Assemble
- Clean all components with suitable cleaner.
- Inspect caliper bore, piston and carrier for damage or excessive wear.

- Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel/tire assembly.
- Remove brake drum, then automatic adjuster spring and lever.
- Remove shoe-to-shoe spring and hold-down spring, Fig. .
- Remove parking brake cable from parking brake lever.
- Remove clip from parking brake cable at backing plate, then brake line from wheel cylinder.
- Remove wheel cylinder assembly with backing plate.
Inspection
- Check backing plate for wear or damage. Replace as necessary.
- Check wheel cylinder for fluid leakage. Repair or replace cylinder as necessary.

- Install new brake pads and attach shim to the outer pad. Tighten lower bolt to specifications.
