  • Raise and support vehicle, then remove front wheel and tire assembly.
  • Remove caliper to steering knuckle attaching bolts.
  • Remove caliper from steering knuckle by rotating free end of caliper away from steering knuckle, then slide opposite end of caliper out from under machined abutment on steering knuckle. Support caliper on upper control arm. Do not allow it to hang on flex hose.
  • Remove front brake rotor, then the outboard pad by prying the pad retaining clip over raised area on caliper, Fig. .

Decreasing Brake Pedal Travel

If a decreasing brake pedal is encountered, the power brake unit may be binding internally. To test the power brake unit for this condition proceed as follows:

  • Place transmission shift lever into Neutral and start engine.
  • Increase engine speed to approximately 1500 RPM, close throttle and completely depress brake pedal.
  • Slowly release brake pedal and stop engine.
  • Remove vacuum check valve and hose from power brake unit. Observe for backward movement of brake pedal.

  • Install suitable pressure gauges, one each on input side and output side of proportioning valve as shown in Fig. .
  • Bleed brake line and pressure gauge, then gradually depress brake pedal and observe gauge readings. Refer to "Hydraulic Brake Controls Specifications" chart.
  • Observe left and right output pressures.
  • Pressure difference between left and right should not be greater than 57 psi.
  • If gauge readings are not within specifications, replace proportioning valve.
