Disc Brakes -> Rear Disc Brakes & Parking Brakes -> Brake System Bleed -> System Priming -> Wheel Bleeding Sequence
Vehicle: 1996 Ford Thunderbird LX 4.6 V8 GAS

Pressure bleeding is recommended for all hydraulic disc brake systems.

The disc brake hydraulic system can be bled manually or with pressure bleeding equipment. The brake pedal will require more pumping and frequent inspecting of fluid level in master cylinder during bleeding operation.

Do not use brake fluid drained from the hydraulic system when bleeding the brakes. Be sure the disc brake pistons are returned to their normal positions and the shoe and lining assemblies are properly seated. Before driving the vehicle, inspect brake operation to be sure a firm pedal has been ob...

Power Brake Units -> Description -> Bendix Diaphragm Types -> Bendix Hydro-Boost System -> Operation -> Vacuum Assist Diaphragm Type
Vehicle: 1996 Ford Thunderbird LX 4.6 V8 GAS

Vacuum Assist Diaphragm Type

The vacuum assist diaphragm assembly multiplies the force exerted on the master cylinder piston in order to increase the hydraulic pressure delivered to the wheel cylinders while decreasing the effort necessary to obtain acceptable stopping performance.

Vacuum assist units get their energy by opposing engine vacuum to atmospheric pressure. A piston, cylinder and flexible diaphragm utilize this energy to provide brake assistance. The diaphragm is balanced with engine vacuum until the brake pedal is depressed, allowing atmospheric pressure to unbalance the u...

Vehicle: 1996 Ford Thunderbird LX 4.6 V8 GAS

Front & Rear Split Systems

When the brake pedal is depressed, both the primary (front brake) and the secondary (rear brake) master cylinder pistons are moved simultaneously to exert hydraulic fluid pressure on their respective independent hydraulic systems. The fluid displacement of the master cylinder is proportioned to fulfill the requirements of each of the two independent hydraulic brake systems, Fig. .

If a failure of a rear (secondary) brake system should occur, initial brake pedal movement causes the unrestricted secondary piston to bottom in the master cylinder bore. Primary p...

Capri

Rear braking is provided by self-adjusting, single piston, floating caliper disc brakes, Fig. . The caliper slides on two hollow, stainless steel guide pins in bushings.

One guide pin is secured to the anchor bracket by a bolt. The other guide pin is held in position by the caliper retaining bolt.

The disc pads are held in the anchor bracket by two retaining clips and a "V" spring. The caliper must be removed to replace the disc pads.

During normal operation, hydraulic pressure from the master cylinder pushes the piston forward and applies pressure on the inboard brake pad. This pre...
