These vehicles are equipped with a fully automatic adjustment mechanism. In the event of brake shoe replacement the following initial adjustment procedure must be completed prior to driving the vehicle.

  • Ensure parking brake lever is fully released.
  • Depress brake pedal as far as possible 2-3 times. This will cause automatic adjuster to correctly adjust rear brakes.
  • Apply and release park brake lever one time after service brakes have been adjusted.

If a decreasing brake pedal is encountered, the power brake unit may be binding internally. To test the power brake unit for this condition proceed as follows:

  • Place transmission shift lever into Neutral and start engine.
  • Increase engine speed to approximately 1500 RPM, close throttle and completely depress brake pedal.
  • Slowly release brake pedal and stop engine.
  • Remove vacuum check valve and hose from power brake unit. Observe for backward movement of brake pedal.

  • Raise and support vehicle, then remove front wheel and tire assembly.
  • Remove caliper to steering knuckle attaching bolts.
  • Remove caliper from steering knuckle by rotating free end of caliper away from steering knuckle, then slide opposite end of caliper out from under machined abutment on steering knuckle. Support caliper on upper control arm. Do not allow it to hang on flex hose.
