Front & Rear Split System
When the brake pedal is depressed, both the primary (front brake) and the secondary (rear brake) master cylinder pistons are moved simultaneously to exert hydraulic fluid pressure on their respective systems, Fig. .
If the rear (secondary) brake system fails, initial brake pedal movement will cause the unrestricted secondary piston to bottom in the master cylinder bore. Primary piston movement will displace hydraulic fluid in the primary section of the master cylinder to actuate the front brake system.

The function of the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) is to minimize wheel lockup during heavy braking on most road surfaces. The system performs this function by monitoring wheel speed and controlling the brake fluid pressure to each front wheel and both rear wheels during braking. This allows the driver to retain directional stability and better steering capability.

Brake System Bleed
Before bleeding the rear brakes, the rear displacement cylinder pistons must be returned to their top most position. Using a TECH 1 scan tool or suitable equivalent, enter the manual control function and "APPLY" the rear motor. Ensure the enable relay is "ON." If a scan tool is not available, bleed the front brakes to ensure that a firm brake pedal exists, then carefully drive vehicle over 4 mph to cause the ABS to initialize itself. This will return the rear displacement cylinder to the top position. The entire brake system should now be rebled.

- Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
- Remove brake drum. If brake lining is dragging on brake drum, back off brake adjustment by rotating adjusting screw. If brake drum is rusted or corroded to axle flange and cannot be removed, lightly tap axle flange to drum mounting surface with a suitable hammer.
- Using brake spring pliers or equivalent, remove brake return springs, Fig. .
- Using suitable pliers, remove hold-down springs and lever pivot.

- Remove pedal pushrod boot, silencer, check valve, vacuum switch and grommets, as equipped, then the front housing seal.
- Scribe matching marks between front and rear housing sections, then mount booster assembly in suitable holding fixture with rear housing facing up.
- Apply pressure to housing with holding fixture forcing screw and rotate rear housing counterclockwise to unlock housing halves.
