Drum Brakes -> Type 1 -> Adjustments -> Parking Brake -> Service Brake
Vehicle: 2000 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2 L4 GAS

These brakes have self-adjusting shoe mechanisms that ensure proper lining-to-drum clearances at all times. The automatic adjusters operate only when the brakes are applied as the vehicle is moving rearward.

An initial adjustment is required after the brake shoes have been relined or replaced, or when the length of the adjusting screw has been changed during service operations.

Frequent usage of an automatic transmission forward range to halt reverse vehicle motion may prevent the automatic adjusters from functioning, thereby inducing low pedal heights. Should low pedal heights be enc...

BRAKE SERVICE PROCEDURES FOR 2000 Pontiac Sunfire AUTOMOBILES

Includes anti-lock brakes, disc, drum, power and hydraulic brake services diagnostics and procedures for domestic and imported 2000 Pontiac Sunfire cars and light trucks from 1990+.

Anti-lock Brakes -> Delphi DBC 7 -> Description -> Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) -> Brake Pressure Modulator Valve (BPMV) -> Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) Module -> Enhanced Traction System (ETS) -> System Components -> System Operation -> Traction Control System (TCS) -> Traction Control System (TRAC) On/Off Switch -> Wheel Speed Sensors (WSS)
Vehicle: 2000 Pontiac Sunfire 2.4 L4 GAS

System Operation

Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS)

The ABS system will control hydraulic pressure in the individual wheel circuits to prevent any wheel from slipping. A separate hydraulic line and specific solenoid valves are provided for each wheel. The ABS can decrease, hold or increase hydraulic pressure to each wheel brake. However, it cannot increase hydraulic pressure above what the master cylinder is transmitting.

Enhanced Traction System (ETS)

The ETS limits wheel slip during acceleration when one or more of the drive wheels are accelerating too rapidly and the brake switch is off. T...

Brake System Bleed

In most circumstances a manual brake bleed is all that is required. Manual Bleed

Use suitable container to catch fluid.

  • Clean reservoir cover and surrounding area.
  • Remove cover, fill fluid reservoir and install cover.
  • Attach one end of a clear plastic hose to rear hydraulic modulator bleeder valve, then submerge other end of hos...
