| Used Wiper Transmission (Electrical)
A wiper transmission is mounted on and is normally a part of the windshield wiper motor. It can be considered as the gear drive for the windshield wiper.
The wiper motor is an electric motor which powers the wiper arms. The rotary motion of the wiper arms into a back and forth wiping motion is enabled by a set of plastic gears and cranks. Built in limit switches make the wiper arms to stop at the bottom of the windshield when the wipers are shut off.
It is very essential that the wiper transmissions of a car operate properly. Even if the wiper shafts are turning freely, check the two grooved pulleys while installing the used wiper transmission. In order to properly install the operating cables on the transmission, the two pulleys at the end of the transmission must “unlock”. The pulleys should not be frozen tight.
To check if the used wiper transmission is operating properly, remove the wiper blade and arm while the transmission is mounted in the car. Push downwards on the top of the shaft where the blade arm is mounted. The shaft should move about 1/8” to 1/4” while the two pulleys on the bottom of the transmission should separate.
Once the two pulleys have separated you should be able to pull on the two cables simultaneously. This should allow you to pull the cables about ? of an inch. A recoil spring is mounted between the two spools which winds up when you pull on the cables. This mechanism allows you to properly install and tension the cables in your car.
In case the transmission does not unlock, most probably the collar is rusted to the shaft. As a result of this, the upper pulley attached to it may be frozen in place. For best results, one can soak the used wiper transmission in penetrating oil for a few days. Try not to separate the pulleys using a small screwdriver or a thin chisel which might damage the pawls and cams on the pulleys. The pawls and cams keep the pulleys “locked” together when the pressure on the wiper shaft is released.
A wide range of used wiper transmissions are available for a variety of cars. The wide range of used wiper transmissions is cost effective. The low cost and high quality are the benefits which make for a strong case.
