A quarter window is a window pane, which is situated approximately above the rear wheel. Next to a larger window, it is a small, usually movable glass pane which allows the directing of air into or out of the cabin. The quarter window, though technically, is situated in or behind the rear door; the term is at times also referred to the front ventipane.
While removing the quarter window, gently push the front of the glass outwards from the inside. That is because the quarter window is held at the front by metal tabs perpendicular to the direction of motion of the car. Push the quarter window by reaching into the car through the open door. That is to ensure you are able to catch it with the other hand should it release suddenly.
While installing a used quarter window, one can insert a quarter window trim in to the window seal before the trim/seal/glass is installed in to the opening as an assembly. Take a 3-4’ long piece of electric wire. Insert this wire into the rubber and leave some of it sticking out of the groove. Align the trim and press it in as far as you can into the groove. This will allow the trim piece to engage with the rubber seal.
Replace the quarter window seals while installing used quarter window. The old seals might start to shrink, harden and crack which will allow wind and water to leak through. Used quarter windows can be given a new look with new quarter window seals.
If the quarter window has heavily chromed channels, it may cause a very tight fit when installing quarter seals. Make use of a light lubricant to make the seal slide easily. Without scratching the chrome, clean out any rust or debris with a small wire brush before installing quarter window.
The flap at the leading edge of the quarter window extending toward the inside of the car should slip behind the rubber door molding. Fit the rubber on the frame before applying any adhesive. Areas where the adhesive will be applied should be free of oil, moisture and wax; otherwise, the adhesive will not stick.
