Used Hood Latch (Mechanical)

It’s impossible to see ahead of you if your hood flies open while you’re driving. To minimize the risk of getting into an accident, slow down as quickly as possible. Do not attempt to drive again until the hood is down and latched. Used hood latches are available to overcome the problem of faulty hood latches. It serves as the shield to your car’s engine system thereby protecting it from any damage.

Most hood latches can be adjusted by loosening the mounting screws followed by sliding the latch lower. This puts more force against the spring. To put more tension in case of rubber bumpers, give them a few turns. This will raise them up. Hood latches should be lubricated with a heavy-bodied grease to keep in a fine working condition. The hood could fly open suddenly if primary latch isn’t engaged or hood release is inadvertently triggered. One can even install a secondary hood latch that has been coated for improved corrosion resistance.

In older cars, one has to feel for the latch and move it to lift open the hood. Most cars nowadays have two release mechanisms – one interior and one exterior to act as a theft deterrent and to prevent the hood from opening while driving. The interior release mechanism is located on the driver’s side below the steering wheel and the used latch has to be pulled to release. This will open the hood enough for you to find the exterior used hood latch. The exterior used hood latch may not be visible, so feel for the latch and move it and lift open the hood.

Failure of hood latch can result in the hood popping open while you are driving. When the hood opens in this fashion, it will block your view of the road in front of you. Hence, as a safety precaution, a second hood latch system should be provided. Hood latches are also subject to wear and tear; hence, a regular maintenance is required as the car’s engine system protection is dependent on the hood latches.

You can order for these either online or offline. Numerous online sites provide locating services for used hood latches. These services are a cost effective and efficient means of obtaining salvaged parts at reasonable prices.
