Used Carrier Assembly (Transmission)

In the center of the axle on rear-wheel driven cars, and inside the transaxle in front-wheel driven cars, is located the differential. A carrier assembly is a sort of “cage” inside the differential housing which holds the pinion gears.

Used carrier assembly can be of different variety. There is the aluminum bed and steel bed assembly. Apart from these, there is the mounting and tilt frame assembly. There is also the wheel lift and slide-in tire restraint carrier assembly. A few other varieties of used carrier assemblies are also available.

While installing a used carrier assembly, place thrust washers under the side gears. The pinion gears can be meshed with the side gears. You need to rotate the pinion gears on the side gears till they align with the hole in the carrier. Then the pinion shaft can be installed. To check if the torque is within specifications, use a rolling torque wrench. One side gear needs to be blocked while the rolling torque is checked on the other side gear.

With the help of a bearing drift, press the side bearings into the carrier. Make sure the bearings are installed on the same side from which they were removed.

When the carrier is reinstated into the housing, make sure the outer races are seated. The dial indicator can be calibrated by preloading indicator until needle travels ? of full travel. It can also be calibrated by setting indicator dial to zero at needle.

Once the outer races are seated properly, the ring gear can be moved against the drive pinion. This will help to obtain zero backlashes. Then, fit the largest shim on the ring gear side. This shim will take up clearance. Install the other shim on the opposite side to take up clearance plus desired preload. At times the shim sizes may have to be changed to obtain desired preload and backlash.

Adjust the bearing preload correctly and install the caps. On the pinion flange install the holding tool. This will prevent the pinion flange from turning. Install the gasket and cover.

A wide range of used carrier assemblies are available for a variety of cars. The wide range of used carrier assemblies is cost effective. The low cost and high quality are the benefits which make for a strong case.
