When Customizing Motorcycles, Riders Need To Consider Insurance

WAUKESHA, Wis., June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- A recent article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel illustrated another effect of the struggling economy - motorcycle riders transitioning from purchasing new motorcycles to upgrading their current bikes. While this can prove to be a frugal way to keep their ride "feeling" new, it is important that these motorcycle owners alert their insurance company to the upgrades and additions.

"We see far too many people who don't properly insure the accessories on their motorcycle," said Lisa Kozik, Claims Manager at Markel American Insurance Company. "They often don't understand that an accessory is anything that is added to the motorcycle after it leaves the factory, and they fall under a different type of coverage."

Most motorcycle insurers offer accessory coverage as an additional coverage to the base policy. While many motorcycle insurance policies include a small amount of accessory coverage, the company will frequently offer the option to purchase additional accessory coverage to protect the extra accessories many riders add to their motorcycles.

Kozik recommends that any time a motorcyclist adds something to their bike, or their riding gear, they contact their insurance company to update their policy. "Accessory coverage is usually quite affordable and can save riders a lot of hassle in the event of a claim."
