2009 Chrysler Jeep Superstores Detroit APBA Gold Cup Races Weekend Provides Good Times In Hard Times with the "Roar On The River"

DETROIT, June 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Hard pressed area families, individuals and active military can enjoy good times during hard times thanks to special consideration this year at the 2009 Chrysler Jeep Superstores Detroit APBA Gold Cup unlimited hydroplane races July 10-12 with "Family Five Bucks" tickets and free admission for active military.

General admission tickets for all the parks will be good for the full weekend and be sold at a special discount of $5 each. Up to four tickets per family will be sold with demonstration of unemployment when purchased at the Gold Cup ticket office, starting July 7, during race week. Active members of the U.S. Armed Forces are admitted free by showing their military id at the ticket office.

Friday, July 10, is "free Friday" for everyone, with the racecourse open until 7 p.m. for racing fans. The races take place on the Detroit River racecourse near Belle Isle, recognized worldwide as the premier site for hydroplane boat racing.

The announcement was made by Mark Weber, Detroit River Regatta Association event director, presenter of the race. Title sponsor making the family-friendly tickets and active military free admission possible is the Chrysler Jeep Superstores Association, the independently owned retailers from Monroe to Fowlerville and from Clinton to Port Huron.

The Gold Cup weekend features unlimited hydroplanes boats with 3,000 horsepower engines hitting 200 miles-per-hour and covering a football field in less than a second. A full range of other boat races are scheduled, including catamaran-style "offshore" boats running 39 to 44 feet long with engines up to 3,700 horsepower. Family-friendly entertainment and attractions, larger picnic areas, games and special hot rod displays, located in Henderson Park, round out the weekend.

The U.S. Navy's West Coast Super Hornet Demo Team will perform flight demonstrations of one of the U.S. Armed Forces' most impressive aircraft, the FA-18.

The 2009 Gold Cup races will be an unprecedented and historic second running 100th running for the oldest motorsports trophy in the world. The 2008 Gold Cup races were not completed due to inclement weather and a spectacular crash.
