The Medal of Honor, established in 1986, is presented annually and is SAE's most prestigious award. The award recognizes an SAE International member for his or her unique and significant contributions to SAE International and is funded through the SAE Foundation.

Hancock recently completed 10 years of service as Chairman of the SAE Foundation Board of Trustees. An SAE Fellow, Hancock has been an SAE member since 1974 and has been part of both the Detroit and Indiana SAE Sections. He is honored not only for his service to SAE International as a member of its Board of Directors and Strategic Planning Committee, but also for his roles as Chairman of the Detroit Section and General Chairman of the Truck & Bus General Committee.

Hancock has received SAE's Sid Olsen Engineering Award, the State of Indiana Sagamore of the Wabash Award, and the Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold for Services to the Republic of Austria (Grobes Goldenes Ehrenzeichen fur Verdienste um die Republik Osterreich).
