SUNDAY, APRIL 5: FIRST TUBELESS TIRE

Profile America - Sunday, April 5th. For decades before the current economic downturn, spring was the traditional time to check out the new cars. In 1954, people flocking to Packard showrooms were treated to something different. The new Packard models featured a technological breakthrough that soon swept the industry - the tubeless tire. The idea had been patented more than 50 years earlier by Goodyear but had never been developed for sale. Today, while tires last longer than ever, we still use a lot of them. There are more than 244 million motor vehicles in the country. The average car covers almost 12,500 miles a year, the average van, SUV and pickup truck, about 11,000. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau online at www.census.gov.
