Bosch's Diesel Common Rail and Gasoline Direct Injection Systems Power Four Award-Winning Engines

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Bosch, the world's leading supplier of clean diesel and gasoline systems, powers four vehicles in the 2009 Ward's 10 Best Engines awards through its diesel common rail and gasoline direct injection systems.

Award-winning engines featuring Bosch technology include:

-- Volkswagen AG's 2.0-liter SOHC I-4 turbodiesel, featured on the 50-state compliant 2009 Jetta TDI

-- BMW AG's 3.0-liter DOHC I-6 turbodiesel, featured on the 2009 BMW 335d

-- The 2009 Cadillac Escalade, featuring the 304 HP 3.6L direct injection engine

-- Audi AG's 2.0-liter TFSI turbocharged DOHC I-4, featured on the 2009 A4, Avant and sedan models

Diesel Common Rail

Bosch's high-pressure diesel injection system has greatly influenced the advancements of clean diesel technology. In 1997, common rail technology brought a new dimension to the diesel engine market, resulting in improved fuel economy of up to 30 percent, reduced carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 25 percent and increased performance with a 50 percent improvement in torque.

"The 2009 Jetta TDI has been an exciting vehicle to be a part of because it is now meeting the new emissions requirements of all 50 states by achieving 40 mpg highway," said Bernd Boisten, regional president, Diesel Systems North America, Robert Bosch LLC. "We are honored to be a partner in the development process with Volkswagen for its 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine and congratulate them on this esteemed powertrain award."

The Jetta's 2.0-liter turbocharged direct injection (TDI) engine uses the latest generation of Bosch clean diesel common rail system capable of up to 1800 bar (nearly 30,00 psi) and multiple (up to five) pre- and post-injections through piezo-electric injectors.

Additional vehicle content from Bosch includes the high-pressure pump, engine electronic control unit, low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation pressure sensors, cam sensors, lambda sensors and the hot film air mass sensor, and glow timing electronic control unit.

The BMW 335d features Bosch's diesel common rail system, which includes the electronic control unit (ECU), rail, pump and injectors. Additionally, the system includes Bosch's NOx reduction system (Denoxtronic), which includes the dosing module and control unit, as well as various sensors. According to BMW, the engine is capable of 425 pound-feet of torque, taking it from zero to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds while achieving exceptional fuel economy - 23 mpg city and 33 mpg highway.

"The BMW 335d is a significant contributor to the change in consumer perspectives," explained Boisten. "It proves that today's clean diesels can be stylish, sporty and achieve outstanding fuel economy."

Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI)

Bosch's second generation gasoline direction injection system, DI-Motronic, enables further optimization of the gasoline engine. Through precise control of fuel injection and timing, the Bosch DI-Motronic system is able to increase horsepower and torque without sacrificing fuel economy. Bosch's GDI technology enables automakers to develop smaller engines, while maintaining performance.

"We are proud to be a part of the award-winning Cadillac CTS with its impressive blend of dramatic design, technology and craftsmanship," said Sujit Jain, regional president, Gasoline Systems North America, Robert Bosch LLC.

"We are also honored to partner with Audi, who succeeded in increasing the fuel economy of its 2.0-liter TFSI by 11 percent - making the A4 one of the most economical cars in its class," explained Jain.

The newest Audi TFSI engine produces 211 horsepower, which is 5.5 percent more than its predecessor, while torque was increased by 24.6 percent to 258 pound-feet.

The main elements of the DI-Motronic system include the engine control unit, high-pressure pump and magnet solenoid or piezo fuel injector.

Ward's 10 Best Engines

The 2009 Ward's 10 Best Engines awards will be presented Jan. 14 during a ceremony in Detroit that runs in conjunction with the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS).

Selected by the editors of Penton Media Inc.'s Ward's Automotive Group, the 2009 list marks the 15th year for the Ward's 10 Best Engines program, the North American auto industry's only awards honoring powertrain excellence and considered by many to be the "Oscars" for automotive engines.
