Stephen C. Owings, Co-founder of Road Safe America Will discuss Slowing Down Trucks to Save Gas and Lives.

Each year, according to records from the Department of Transportation, approximately 4,000 motorists and 1,000 large truck drivers are killed in wrecks involving heavy trucks. Over 100,000 people are injured in such crashes. When large trucks and cars collide in a fatal wreck, research shows people in cars are fatalities 98 percent of the time.

Stephen C. Owings, co-founder of Road Safe America, will talk about his organization's nationwide campaign to have speed governors activated and set at 68 miles per hour on all trucks over 13 tons. This could save up to 1,000 gallons of fuel per truck per year, as well as save lives.

Owings founded Road Safe America along with his wife after his 22-year-old son, Cullum, was killed when his car, while stopped in an interstate traffic jam, was crushed from behind by a speeding tractor trailer rig on cruise control. This nonprofit is dedicated to reducing the number of collisions between big trucks and passenger vehicles.
