Johnson Controls was measured on several criteria which include litigation and controversy/conflict analysis, corporate citizenship, innovation and industry leadership, ethical tone, governance and transparency, public and trade partner perception, ethics/compliance programs and systems, and pan-industry effort participation.

"The threshold for ethical behavior has justifiably risen over the past decade, which makes this recognition especially meaningful," said Stephen A. Roell, Chairman and CEO, Johnson Controls. "This award belongs to all of our employees and our executive team, who collectively set and exceed the behavioral standards for our business."

The extensive research process used to compile this list included reviewing more than 10,000 of the world's leading companies on six continents. Ethisphere analysts reviewed codes of ethics, litigation and regulatory infraction histories; evaluated investment in innovation and sustainable business practices; looked at companies' activities to improve corporate citizenship; studied nominations from senior executives, industry peers, suppliers and customers; and worked with consumer action groups for feedback and rating.

Ethisphere's award is the most current of several recent honors for Johnson Controls, including Fortune's top ranking on its list of America's Most Admired Companies in the category of Motor Vehicle Parts, Sustainable Asset Management (SAM) and PricewaterhouseCooper's (PWC) recognition as a Gold Class sector leader for sustainability and being identified as one of the 10 Best Corporate Citizens by Industry (auto and vehicle sector) by Corporate Responsibility Officer (CRO) Magazine.
