Rack & Pinion Repair

Take Care Of Your Car With A Rack And Pinion Repair

You might have seen the internal structure of traditional analog wrist watch while repairing. The structure is cluttered with a number of pulleys, dial, minute and hour hand etc. Have you ever noticed a typical structure which controls the movement of these hands? This structure comprises of a toothed wheel rotating over a toothed moving belt, this clubbed movement monitors the hands of the watch, and is popularly called as 'rack and pinion' arrangement.

The toothed rotating wheel is known as 'pinion' and the moving belt is called 'rack'. The arrangement gives an effective way to convert rotational motion into translational motion. Though the technique is quite old, but it still regulates movements of many components in modern machineries. This arrangement also plays a vital role in automobiles today. This arrangement checks the rotation of steering as without this the steering wheel will start rotating freely and hence it will be difficult to handle the car properly.

Thus, any irregularity or mistiming in its movement may cause your steering wheel to move freely and you'll lose control over your vehicle. So, if the steering wheel shows any maladjustment while turning, there might be some flaws in the rack and pinion arrangement of the steering wheel. These maladjustments should be diagnosed and corrected using the following tips.

Repairing Rack and Pinion Arrangement

This arrangement conjuncts the central unit with the steering box. The steering wheel is attached to rack, which contains a toothed pinion inside it. This arrangement causes the movement in the steering gear. This type of steering wheel is always attached with a strut shock absorbing system. The system contains two tie rod ends, the inner one is connected to the main piston with one end and the outer rod is joined to the outer tie rod. The inner rod can be adjusted during wheel alignments. The different issues with this mechanism and their handling are described in the following section:

  • Movement of the System - The fluidity in the movement of the rack and pinion must be ensured to provide a better control over steering gears. The smoothness in its movement can be achieved by lubricating the apparatus with suitable lubricants. The system may provide rough mobility in the absence of lubrication. You just need to to unscrew the steering wheel from its neck and provide a proper oiling from above.
  • Check for Mistiming of the Rack- The rack may get mistimed and due to which the steering may get maladjusted. This can be characterized by hard or loose steering wheel. This sort of defect must be diagnosed and corrected in time. Perhaps, the job is high precision in nature, so don't pay your extra efforts into it.
  • Worn Out Rack and Pinion- This may happen because of the excessive wear out of the teeth of rack and pinion. Slipping of the steering wheel is a major symptom of this defect. This can only be corrected by replacing the whole arrangement with a better one.

The rack and pinion arrangement is very sensitive in nature and excessive novice handling can damage the system as a whole. Thus, if the problem with the arrangements seems more peculiar, then the expertise treatment is recommended for it.
