Fuel Pump Repair/Replacement

Give Your Car A Brand New Fuel Pump

Fuel keeps the engine going. It basically serves as food for the engine. If the fuel pump is not in a good state, it may kill the whole engine thereby making your car rides an uninteresting and unsafe one. So for a longer life of your engine it is important to replace a defective fuel pump.

Things Required

  • A Set of Sockets.
  • Fire Extinguisher
  • A New Fuel Line.
  • A Set Of Open Ended Wrench
  • A Screw Driver With As Flat Head.
  • A Screw Driver with Phillips Head.
  • A Large Container to Catch the Fuel.

Getting ready

  • Collect all necessary tools and place them near by. Fuel pumps are not replaced very frequently but still a one time investment on equipments like an oil drain pan, a jack stand, and a few sockets is always good.
  • Don't work at a congested place, always choose a place that is well ventilated and airy.
  • First of all, turn the engines off by engaging the parking brakes or place some hard material to stop the car from sliding.
  • Always jack up the car on the surface level.

Step two

  • First of all, disconnect all the battery cables that are negative.
  • After that detach the connection of fuel tank hose that is located at the fuel pump, and then plugging the hose with a wooden dowel or bolt would keep extra fuel from oozing out of the wires. Do not forget to check the hose to find out any defect or damage or crack within the fuel line hose.
  • Disconnect the line that is attached to the carburetor.
  • Remove the bolts that are attached together and then remove the old fuel pump. Clean up any old gasket stuff from the surface of the engine. Apply a coat of gasket sealer on both sides of the new gasket. Put the attaching bolts through the new pump and slip the gasket over the bolts.

Step Two

  • After performing all the above activity the new pump needs to be installed on the engine. Keep in mind that the rocker arm that is located in the pump should be against the eccentric that is placed inside the engine,
  • Also make sure that the push rod is also correctly installed. If the push rod pops out, you can always pack it with some solid grease so that is does not move from the place, while you are installing the pump.
  • Connect the outlet line running through the carburetor. If you find it difficult to attach it, just remove another end of the line that is connected to the carburetor and then reconnect the other end using a wrench so that you do not loose a grip upon the pump.
  • Then join the fuel inlet to the gas tank and then to the hose that allows that vapors to pass.
  • Make sure that the clamps are tightened correctly.
  • Reattach the battery ground table.
  • Start the engine to check the leakage.
