Fuel Ignition Repair

For A Healthy Engine, Fix Your Fuel Ignition

Fuel ignition is mechanism that produces a spark to ignite the fuel in an engine. There are various components in the engine's cylinder that run the ignition of fuel. The two system of ignition are- the primary side that includes the electronic control module and the distributor; the secondary side that includes rotor, the igniting coil, spark plug wires, distributor cap and spark plugs.

Signs of a bad ignition are:

  • The tachometer jerks before stalling,
  • When the igniter gets hot, the car stalls,
  • No spark but starts when pushed,
  • The engine cranks,
  • No spark at the coil.

Signs of a bad ignition switch are:

  • Car stalls and then restarts, only to stall after driving,
  • Absence of battery voltage at the coil,
  • The rotor is bent and distributor is hot,
  • No spark at the plug wires,
  • A cricket like sound is heard from the distributor prior to stopping.

To repair the fuel ignition, first of all you should be able to find the location of the igniters and a few basic steps of how to find out if your car is having a bad ignition. To solve this problem properly, firstly start with basic checks.

  • Starting from ignition switches, the battery splits through several components and finally winds up at the spark plugs. Breakage in any one these paths may result into no sparks and ultimately your car will be stopped.
  • Your car may have varieties of ignition switches that may either melted the solder or pitted the sliding due to much current.
  • Your car may also stall as the switches may develop crud from the grease.
  • The very next step is to check out all the main fuses like ECU, fuses of the fuel pump, and ignition.
  • Make sure that the instrument gauge is working normally. Check whether the circuit check lights are functioning properly.
  • Later check the spark. To check the spark, take out one end of the plug wire then insert a spark plug into the wire, lay the solid end of the plug on the ground and crank the engine for at least five revolutions.
  • Check for sparks at plug wire and distributor cap. If you find no sparks, use a solid ground wire. If you see sparks there, then either your coil is bad or the spark plug is not working.
  • If you find yellow sparks that are regarded to be weak, inspect the ignition coil, spark plug wire or the distributor may have got damaged.
  • If there is no sparks then check at the coil for sparks. If you find white-blue sparks there, you can make out that the problem is not related with ignition.
  • If you car won't start even when there is fuel and sparks, then the sparks inside the pressurized cylinder may be weak.
  • Check if the spark plug boot is soaked in oil or water, you will know if you hear clicks from the injectors.

You will know that there is a bad ignition circuit when your car suddenly cuts out and its engine won't start even if it cranks.

If you smell gas and see sparks but your car still won't start:

  • Check the resistance,
  • Confirm the ignition timer,
  • Go after a de-flooding method,
  • Check for broken, weak or dead plug wires,
  • Test out for a bad cylinder compression by manually or by a compression tester,
  • Check for the start sensor.
