Exhaust Repair/Replacement

Repair Your Car's Exhaust

The car exhaust may seem like a trivial part of your car, but it is the part that makes sure the harmful carcinogens from the car's engine so that it runs to the best of its abilities. It is also important as it removes harmful fumes from the exhaust fumes.

The exhaust system should ideally be repaired by an experienced mechanic but if you think you know sufficiently about cars then you may try it also. If in case you are not sure about the insides of your car then you should at least know what the mechanic is doing so that you are not shortchanged in any case.

For an overhaul of the exhaust system you need a few weapons of choice like a Soldering iron, solder, Welding torch, Socket wrenches, Jack or hydraulic lift, Pipe patches, Bolt cutters, Replacement bolts, Replacement parts.

Mending The Exhaust System

  • Firstly, you need to raise the car on a hydraulic lift or jack. It makes it easy to examine the exhaust system safely.
  • Then you need to decide the point on the exhaust system that requires fixing.
  • The exhaust system has a many different parts like the oxygen gauge, the muffler, the catalytic converter, the exhaust manifold, and the exhaust pipe, along with many diverse pipes linking the various parts. Typically you will find that just one part of the system is spoiled, either through corrosion and rust, product malfunction or because of bumps on the road. There are countless causes damage, but the only way out is to always repair a leaky hole or to restore a faulty part.
  • After finding the fault you must fix up any leaking holes with the soldering iron, you can use a metal patch to close the hole if it is necessary. You can do this only if the damaged area has only one leak and the rest of the car's exhaust system is undamaged or else, the whole part has to be replaced
  • Next disassemble the exhaust system one part at a time. You should start with the tailpipe and move backwards till you reach the damaged part. Occasionally, you will find it easy to take out each part by just cutting the bolts that hold the part to the frame. However typically, you may have to use a welding torch to disengage the part and strip off any support hangers .When doing this you must beware not to damage any of the car's nearby components
  • Next you must replace the defective component with a new one. Make sure that the new component is of the make for your car and suits the requirements of the exhaust system.
  • Afterwards you have to reconnect the remaining components of the exhaust system, beginning with the new part you must attach all the components taken out until you fix the tailpipe.
  • Now you need to do double-check on the fittings and check the welds for leaks. It is ok to do a visual inspection, but the best way to check it to turn on the engine and check for the exhaust.
  • If the test runs ok, then all you have to do is weld the support hangers back to their place. Now the exhaust system is secure and you can go for a ride.
