Drivability Problem

Tackle Your Drivability Problems

If you have an old car then you could be facing drivability problems. The best way to perform an effective troubleshooting and diagnosis is to have a rationalized plan. Once it is carried out, it is important to check the basics. Before replacing the PCM (Powertrain Control Module), make sure about the basic things. In fact PCM is the last thing that should be changed when tackling a drivability problem. More than 80% of drivability problems are as a result of the engine and its control systems.

Take a close look at some of the tips provided below, by following which you can know the present state of your vehicle:

  • Examine the grounds of the vehicle and the PCM power and its connections.
  • With the help of a voltmeter check the voltage of the battery. It must be in between 12.4 to 12.7 volts while in inactive mode.
  • Crank the engine leaving the voltmeter connected to the battery. The voltage is supposed to stay above 9.5 volts.
  • The average voltage should range between 13.2 to 14.7 volts while the engine is in running condition.

MAP Sensors, Temperature Sensors, EGR valves and Mass Air Flow Sensors are some of the factor that can cause drivability problems that may lead to rough engine performance. Low coolant levels, bad distributor caps, spark plugs, low compression and ignition wires can also cause drivability problem as well. Follow the following steps and know for yourself the reason behind drivability problem:

  • First of all check the spark plugs. The plugs will let you know the exact condition of the engine. Make sure that you are using the correct plugs for your car.
  • Check the distributor cap, ignition wires and rotor.
  • Ensure that the plug wires are secured tightly on the plugs and are free from any burns or cracks.
  • If any cracks or burns are found, replace them immediately.
  • Get new wires if you find any sparks arcing or if your car starts running rough or stumbling.
  • Make sure that the vacuum lines are in good shape and connected properly. Track down the lines for breaks, cracks and collapse areas.

Wrecked or split vacuum lines are usually located in most of the unseen areas in the car. Once all the vacuum lines, spark plugs and wires have been checked, look for the electrical connections. Have a look at the terminals after you have unplugged these connections.

Irregular problems can also be due to loose, dirty and corroded connections. Do not forget to verify the filters. Replace the fuel and air filters, as it can solve most of the drivability problems. The electrical problems can be handled in the same manner as it is done in the case of spark plugs and vacuum lines.

To solve out all the electrical problems, check them and have a look at it from every angel. Do not forget to check the gas gauge. It is not easy to troubleshoot a problem, but by using a few simple steps and by using the right and proper equipments, you will be able to locate and repair most of your vehicle problems by yourself. Once you have fixed all the problems and repaired them, make sure that you recheck them once more.
