Learning the Ropes of Diesel Engine

Vehicles are broadly classified into two categories on the basis of type of fuel-used, these are- diesel-based and gasoline-based. However, due to economic viability of the former, most people choose the diesel based automobiles. Perhaps, recognizing this fact, most of the automobile manufacturers have launched their cars in two segments, namely petrol and diesel versions. Besides economic concerns, diesel engines are also much better off in pulling power and longevity. Thus, most of the heavy-duty vehicles, like trucks and buses, have diesel engine in them. Thus it can be easily said that diesel engine forms the bulk of the automobiles today. Diesel engines basically termed as ignition-compression engines. The cylinder in the diesel engine is allowed to pull as much as it can, during the intake stroke, which increases the power of the engine. Perturbations in diesel engine are difficult to be sorted out manually, due to the highly specialized nature of the job. Though, the life of the engine can be enhanced by following some easy tips.

Maintenance of Diesel Engine

Diesel are more powerful and economic than the petrol engines, the former also requires a lot of care from the owner. The life and performance of the engine can be increased by taking some careful measures:

  • During cold, the engine should be left for warm up so as to lessen the oil density. This will stimulate slow oil circulation, which in turn increases the pressure on engine.
  • Various components are attached to the engine, such as time-belt, spark-plugs, fuel injectors, should be replaced after a stipulated time or miles, say 60,000 miles. If any of these apparatus shows signs of damage before time, then they must be replaced simultaneously.
  • Always choose the best quality diesel for your car, and to get away with engine warm-up, keep changing the coolant regularly. If any leakage in radiator or water pump is detected then it should be fixed immediately. All the unwanted materials and debris must be cleared from the radiator.
  • Brake-oil and transmission fluid should be regularly checked and proper servicing of the vehicle must be done after a specific time-period. Air filter must be cleaned to prevent the dirt deposition into it. The filter must be replaced after 15,000 miles.
  • Seasoned check-up by a licensed mechanic is recommended, it will keep your car monitored against any wear and tear.
  • The proper alignment of the engine with its various attachments must be ensured. The structural integrity of the engine with various components, such as- crankshaft, camshaft, engine fan and pulleys- should be maintained. If any structural imperfection is detected then it should be handled immediately.
  • Make sure the diesel injection mechanism is working smoothly and proper lubrication of the whole engine must be done periodically.

Thus, by taking the above measures you can ensure a long life to the diesel engine of your vehicle. If some serious trouble appears in engine, then don't take risk doing it by yourself rush to a qualified mechanic immediately.
