Fix Your Cylinder Head All By Yourself

The whole mechanics of the automobile depends upon the movement of piston attached to a cylinder. This moving piston gives a push to other attached components, and thereby initiates the system to perform. Irrespective the type of fuel-used, every engine has a set of cylinders and pistons attached to it. The mixture of air and fuel enters into the cylinder through a valve, this mixture creates a pressure inside the cylinder, and this pressure pushes the piston forward. The other end of the piston is connected to an output component, say fly wheel, and with movement of the piston, the linked component also moves. The power of the engine is usually defined in terms of the number of cylinders it has, for example, V8 engine has 8 cylinders installed in a set of four each, and it is largely used in racing cars and SUVs. Thus it is clearly evident that the cylinder is the heart of every engine and damage in this part can lead to engine failure.

Common Measures and Fixing tips for Cylinder Heads

The most vulnerable part of the cylinder which can be damaged easily is its head. The cylinder head is connected to the piston rod, and hence it can be safely said that the output of the engine depends heavily on this part of the cylinder. Some common problems with this part of the cylinder are:

  • Sliding friction - Due to a continuous upward and downward motion of the piston, wear and tear due to sliding friction may occur on the heads of the cylinder. This incessant rubbing can reduce the quality of the material of the cylinder. This may lead to scratches on this part and ultimately a serious retardation in piston movement is observed. This can be corrected by applying suitable lubricants on its surface. If these scratches get intensified, the engine will start producing unpleasant noises.
  • Cylinder Head Attachments and Housing - As it has already been noticed that the cylinder head has all important attachments with piston and other outer components. If the connections of the cylinder get loose or imbalanced, then the whole apparatus will ultimately die out. Thus it should be made sure that the structural coherence of the system is maintained with precision. Improper structural connections can be dangerous for the engine performance. The housing for the whole apparatus should remain intact to avoid any unwanted collision within the system.
  • Debris Deposition across the Margins - Debris or dust may get deposited across the margins of the cylinder head. These deposits resist the free motion of the piston and thus hamper the true performance of the engine. These impurities may also get enter into the cylinder and after getting mixed with the air-fuel mixture, it will stimulate the emission of the carbon particles from the engine. These particles also abate the exhaustive system of the vehicle. So, if any such deposition is diagnosed, it should be cleaned with immediate effect.

Cylinder head repair is a very technical job and if you are a novice in handling automobile mechanics, then you should consult a professional for any apparent damage.
