Carburetor Repair/Replacement

Know Your Carbs

Carburettors, popularly known as carbs, are the most crucial part of traditional automobiles. They provide a proper mixture of fuel and air mixtures to the engines. This function of carburettor has been taken over by the fuel-injection devices since 90s. However, many of us usually keep our cars as vintages and develop an emotional attachment with our vehicles. These vintage cars have carburettors attached with them and its malfunctioning may cause some serious issues to the vehicle owners. A disturbed carburettor can reduce the gas mileage of your car and may generate stinking exhaust. To ensure the proper functioning of the carburettor, one needs to understand the working mechanism and structure of it.

Functioning and Repair of the Carburettor

The carburettor has number of openings placed distinctly on a metallic frame. These openings are linked to a bowl, which is always filled with the fuel due to the action of needle and float valves. This valve restricts the entry of pressurized fuel, propelled by the fuel pump. Its functioning deters when the engine turns very hot or cold. In case the engine turns hot, a suitable coolant preferably water is poured into it, and if it turns cold, then some fuel is added to the air-fuel mixture. This is done by using choke device, which allows the entrance of fuel into the required composition. Most of the carburettor related issues generally arise due to deposition of dust or Carbon particles in it. So if you got an errant carburettor, it is advised to first clean it out properly. To get it fixed, you need to follow some general steps:-

  • Turn-off the engine and remove the air housing to have a clear view of the carburettor.
  • Now idetify the body and throat of the carburettor so as to get it sprayed later.
  • Spot the throttle cable and keep it aside to clean it up.
  • Clean the fan and the pulleys thoroughly with help of a brush or cloth.
  • Now turn on the engine, and spray the cleaner to the body of the carburettor. After that tighten its nuts and bolts properly.
  • Now spray the cleaner into its throat with engine being revved by the throttle cable to prevent the stall out of the engine. This will smoothen up the engine sound effectively.
  • Leave your car idle for sometime, say ten minutes, and after that you can take it for a drive.

Carburettor Replacement

If the carburettor persistently shows error and it is a cause for a serious botheration for you, then get it replaced with a better one. The replacement should be done after a proper inspection by a qualified technician. The market must be searched thoroughly for getting the best deal. If you are looking for a second-hand carburettor, then a trusted and known dealer of used auto-parts is recommended. So, get the carburettor of your car healthy and preserve the inherited treasure.
