Drive to the Beat with a Car Stereo.
For lovers of music a stereo in a car is a must. Whether it is to beat the traffic blues, or to sing along a lonely road, a car stereo often provides much needed company to the drivers. If you are low on budget but high on spirit then installing a car audio system is just the way to go. For those who are expert with wires can easy install a new car audio system.
Before starting it is sensible to check on the tools needed. Tools like Wire cutters, Wire strippers, Screwdriver set and Electrical tape are needed along with the new car stereo
Firstly, buy a car stereo that can fit into the stereo space of the car. You can also buy a stereo that is manufactured for your car model. Such a stereo system will be compatible to both the car make and the model. You can also get a custom made model done up according to the car's specifications.
Next, search for the guide for the dash panel of the car it will tell you how to remove the old stereo or radio properly.
Taking out the Old Stereo
- Firstly, separate the negative cable from the battery. You must not work on the electrical system of the car with the negative wire connected.
- Then take out the dash panel that covers the old stereo. Remove and slide out the old head unit. According to the make of the car there can be either one single plug with multiple wires connecting to the back of the stereo or a series of individual wires. In case there are a series of individual wires going to the back you should not detach them as of yet. It is best to do them one at a time to avoid confusion.
- Afterwards if you got a wiring harness for the car, close up the connector into the new wiring harness. You can set up the new stereo now only or else if you don't have a wire harness you can continue to installing the new stereo.
Manual installation
- Start by connecting the positive wire from one speaker at a time to the positive connector on the rear of the stereo. Next, do the same for the negative wires. If in the case only one wire is emerging from the speakers then the speakers are grounded at the chassis you have to install new speaker wiring in such a case.
- Else you must attach the ground wire of the audio system to a bolt near place where the radio is mounted on the dash. Confirm that the wire is attached to a metal bolt and not fiberglass or plastic.
- Then join the 12 ignition power wires to the new stereo. Check the stereo's installation manual to see where the wires go.
Setting In The New Stereo
- Slide in the new stereo inside the mounting bracket that comes with it.
- Then plug in the harness connector to the end of the new stereo.
- Now there should be the antenna wire left to plug in. Set the antenna wire in the new stereo.
- Next slide in the new stereo into the slot for the stereo and reconnect the negative wire of the car battery.
- Finally test the car audio system.
If it works, then screw on the new stereo system into the car. You can now try out car audio installation all by yourself.
