Alloy Rim/Wheel Repair
|
Learn How To Handle Your Alloy Wheels
Alloy wheels are more trustworthy than those of the traditional metal wheels. These wheels not only ensure a safer and reliable drive but it also tenders catchy appearance to your cars. Any spots or blemishes on these wheels fade the look of the vehicle, and these marks also increase its proneness to future retardation. Thus wheels should be checked periodically to linger on their replacement. Though, we usually feel helpless in handling with these mechanical problems, surprisingly there is much we can do to assure longer life for these significant limbs of our cars.
General Issues and Repairing Tips for Alloy Wheels
Some of the most common issues that usually occur with alloy wheels include- truing, surface deformities, stress cracks, over run-out, scratches and residual marks, structural uprightness and many more. Any of these deficiencies must be detected and treated accordingly. Let us learn some of the useful repairing techniques to handle these issues categorically in the following section:-
Truing - Truing, also known as rim-straightening, is generally applied to ensure the free movement of the wheel along its vertical-axis. This is carried out in presence of controlled heat and pressure. These tolerances facilitate the smooth ride of the vehicle.
Stress Cracks - Alloy wheels often suffer stress-cracks and air-pocket inclusions due to 'Hydrogen Embrittlement', which generally occur due to excessive heating. These cracks or inclusions can prove to be dangerous if it is not treated timely. This can be treated by filling the cracks with a suitable material. It is advised that these complicated issues should be handled by a qualified mechanic.
Scratches and Residual Marks - Sometimes while driving on a rough terrain, the wheels get some unwanted scratches or spots which not only deteriorate the look of the car, but it also increases the chances of future-damage. These scratches or marks should be treated as soon as they appear. These spots can be tackled with a suitable polishing and waxing material. Just clean the debris and other impurities from the affected area and then apply the polishing material gently with help of a sponge or a piece of cloth. After its application, coat the area with wax to restore the shiny appearance of the wheel.
Structural Uprightness - The major areas of structural integrity of the wheel can be observed by a mere visual-inspection. At times the mechanics over-tight the lugs or bearings, which may lead to structural disruption of the wheels. So if you are going for a long-drive it advised to check for the torqueing of the lugs and bearings of the wheel, to avoid any midway complicacies. The structural issues may also appear due to a minor flaw in reinstalling the tyre while repairing flat tyres.
Corroded Bead Seats - The bead seats may get corroded due to prolonged exposure to moisture and dust. These defected bead seats may allow the wheel rim to loose air and thereby substantially reduces the life of the tyre. So, to treat these rusted bead seats, a proper polishing stuff must be applied on the corroded region.
