New Design Cylinder Head Bolts On 1981-84 Ford Lincoln-Mercury 1.6L (98 CID) Engines
The subject engines manufactured after July 27, 1983, use new design cylinder head bolts that do not require separate torque washers under the head of the bolts. The torque surface is provided with a flat surface integrated at the head of the bolt.
When using the new design bolts on engines built before July 27. 1983, discard the original torque washers. This will prevent thread stripping at the engine block assembly when the bolts are torqued.
The washers are still required when using old design bolts.
