Factory Crankshaft Repair Policy
Announced By GM (Chevrolet Div.)

GM (Chevrolet Motor Div.) announced its crankshaft repair policy in the Chevrolet Service News Bulletin, Fall-Winter, 1977. The following procedures will be followed at the factory to salvage crankshafts:

In the past, it has been an accepted practice to grind all crankshaft main bearing journals .009 undersize. When this was done and the crankshaft assembled into an engine, the oil pan rail was stamped 009 and all bearing inserts were identified on the back side with 009.

After review of the above practice, it will be acceptable to grind only the journal or journals that require regrinding. This means that service technicians may find a crankshaft with one or more journals ground .009 undersize. The service technician must be advised of the change and the following means of
identification:

The .009 marking on the oil pan will be removed.

The crankshaft throw will be stamped on one side of the undersize journal with a 9 and a large spot of light green paint.

The main bearing cap will be painted light green on each side of the affected journal.

The main bearing inserts will still be identified with 009 US on the back surface.
