Valve Seat Installation On
Chevrolet Cylinder Heads
Having Flame Hardened Seats

You may experience serious difficulty trying to bore Chevrolet
heads having flame hardened valve seats as the seats are hard
enough to dull carboloy cutters.

We found that a two stage method is successful. First, use an
undersize carboloy cutter to machine a counterbore one-half the
wall thickness of the seat. Second, use a full size carboloy
cutter to complete machining the counterbore. With this method
the seat counterbore can be successfully machined without
noticeable dulling of the cutters.

The use of a suitable cutting agent is helpful in this procedure.
