Accessing Diagnostic Trouble Codes
Connect a suitably programmed scan tool and Vehicle Communication Module (VCM) with appropriate adapters, or equivalents, to the Data Link Connector (DCL) located in the passenger compartment beneath the instrument panel. Follow tool manufacturer's instructions for accessing Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC).

DRIVELINE, U-JOINT & CV AXLES REPLACEMENT PROCEDURES FOR 2008 Ford Explorer AUTOMOBILES
DRIVESHAFT, Replace -> Front -> One Piece Driveshaft -> Rear -> Three Piece Driveshaft -> Two Piece Driveshaft
Vehicle: 2008 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 4.0 V6 GAS
Front
- Raise and support the vehicle.
- Index-mark front driveshaft to front axle flange and at transfer case flange.
- Remove and discard bolts and U-joint retainers.
- Remove and discard flange bolts.
- Compress and separate front driveshaft from front axle, then separate driveshaft from transfer case. Wrap electrical tape around the bearing cups to prevent them from falling off the U-joint spider.
- Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
- Tighten transfer case flange bolts in a cross pattern.
- Torque flange bolts to 22 ft. lbs.
- Torque U-joint retainer bolts to 26 ft. lbs.

This lamp should light after approximately 60,000 miles of operation, Fig. . The amber lens lamp is located on the instrument panel and has the word Emissions, Emiss or EGR printed on it. After performing the required emission control maintenance, the module must be replaced or reset, depending on type of module used. On module equipped with reset feature, reset the module as follows:
