R-134a is a non-toxic, non-flammable, clear, odorless, liquefied gas.
R-134a refrigerant is not compatible with R-12 refrigerant. Even small amounts of R-12 in an R-134a system can cause lubricant contamination, improper air conditioning performance or compressor failure. Never add R-12 to an R-134a system.
New service ports have been added to compressor to prevent charging system with R-12 refrigerant. R-134a systems require a special compressor lubricant.

- Remove fan pulley and clutch as outlined under "Water Pump, Replace."
- Drain cooling system into suitable container.
- Remove water hoses.
- Remove mounting nut and engine suspension eye.
- Remove cable channel.
- Remove mounting bolts and thermostat housing.
- Remove thermostat.
- Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
- Ensure vent arrow points upward.
- Install new gasket.

- Remove fan as outlined under "Radiator, Replace."

- Mark alternator drive belt travel direction for installation alignment.
- Remove air duct, as required.
- Lock fan belt pulley in position using holding tool No. 11-5-050, or equivalent.
- Remove fan pulley mounting nut using wrench tool No. 11-5-040, or equivalent, Fig. . Nut has lefthand threads.
- Remove pulley and coupling.
- Remove air conditioning compressor drive belt as outlined under "Compressor, Replace."
- Remove drive belt tensioning roller cap.
- Loosen belt tensioner and remove alternator drive belt. ...
