Accessing Diagnostic Trouble Codes

The diagnostic connector, Fig. , is located under the lefthand side of the instrument panel. These models utilize a 16-way connector which also serves as a diagnostic link for the PCM and air bag electronic control module. In all cases, a DRB, or equivalent, diagnostic scan tool can be linked to this connector to obtain diagnostic trouble codes.

  • Connect DRB, or equivalent, scan tool to diagnostic connector, then turn ignition switch to On position.

The only serviceable power brake booster components are the vacuum hose and the check valve. The power brake booster must be serviced as an assembly. If diagnosis indicates a power brake booster fault condition, the unit must be replaced as an assembly.

Brake Lines & Linings

Remove one of the front wheels and inspect the brake disc, caliper and linings. The wheel bearings should be inspected at this time and repacked if necessary.

Do not get any oil or grease on the linings. It is recommended that both front wheel sets be replaced whenever a respective pad is worn or damaged. Inspect and, if necessary, replace rear brake linings also.

If the caliper is cracked or fluid leakage through the casting is evident, it must be replaced as a unit.

Brake System Bleed

The base brake system must be bled anytime air is permitted to enter the hydraulic system. However, anti-lock brake system components should only be bled if the hydraulic control unit has been removed or if there is reason to believe that air has entered the unit. The ABS portion of the braking system must be bled separately. Under most circumstances, only the base brake system will require bleeding.   • Remove ground wire from combination valve bracket.
  • Remove master cylinder retaining nuts, Fig. .
