  • Disconnect brake fluid sensor electrical connector from master cylinder reservoir.
  • Position a drain pan under master cylinder.
  • On models equipped with separately mounted reservoir, disconnect reservoir hoses from the master cylinder.
  • On all models, disconnect brake lines from the master cylinder. Plug all lines and fittings.
  • Remove master cylinder to brake booster attaching nuts.
  • Pull master cylinder outward and away from brake booster, Fig. .
  • Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:

Replacement

  • Raise and support vehicle, then remove front wheel.
  • Remove lockpin bolt, Figs. through .
  • Lift up caliper body, using the guide pin bolt as a fulcrum. Use wire to suspend the caliper.
  • Remove inner and outer shims, pad assemblies, and pad clips from caliper support.
  • Measure hub torque using a suitable spring scale to determine brake drag torque after pan installation, Fig. .

  • Disconnect battery ground cable.
  • Raise and support vehicle.
  • Remove front brake assembly and suspend assembly with wire.
  • Remove hub cap, then the cotter pin.
  • Remove slotted nut and washer, then the outer bearing.
  • Remove front hub and rotor assembly.
  • Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
    • Tighten slotted wheel bearing nut to specifications.
    • Loosen slotted nut completely.
    • Torque slotted nut to 72 inch lbs.

4WD Models

  • Place free wheeling hub in "Free" position.

Brake System Bleed

  • Bleed brake master cylinder as follows:
    • Fill master cylinder reservoir with DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid, then depress brake pedal fully and plug master cylinder outlet fitting.
    • With fitting opening plugged, release brake pedal. Perform this operation several times to fill master cylinder with brake fluid and purge all air.
  • Start engine and bleed air from hydraulic lines. Refer to Figs. and , for hydraulic line bleed sequence. Ensure master cylinder reservoir is kept full during bleed procedure.
  • Ensure brake pedal feels firm when applied. Inspect and fill master cyl...
